Etthingili Alifushi Atoll is formed on the basis of a compromise between two islands called Alifushi and Etthingili. Etthingili is also known as Kalhifushi. These two islands are collectively known as the Powell islands according to the Admiralty Chart of the country.

These two Powel islands are situated on a detached reef of their own. The interesting part is that the reef is in very deep waters.

There is a history behind its name as the Powel islands. Captain Robert Moresby named this group of island after Lieutenant F.F. Powell. History has it that Powell assisted in the survey of atoll of the Republic of Maldives in 1834-36. It is believed that Powell surveyed the north-west coast of Ceylon.

Although it is made by combining two islands, this atoll is not very big in size. The length of this atoll is 2 miles while its width is 1 mile. Out of the two islands of this atoll, only Alifushi is the one the that is inhabited. Alifushi is famous all over the world for its boat builders.

The island also houses a number of carpenters who add to the revenue of the country. Boat building is a very important part of the maldivian culture. In other words, boat building can be said to be one of the main bread earning jobs of the country.
