Maamakunudhoo Atoll is one of the smallest yet popular atolls of the Republic of Maldives. This atoll is also known as the Malcolm Atol.
Maamakunudhoo Atoll is located at the westernmost part of the Republic of Maldives. Maamakunudhoo Atoll is a reef along with a lagoon. This atoll is blessed with amazing natural beauty.
Maamakunudhoo Atoll is 27 km long and its average width is 5 km. Although this atoll is an attraction in terms of the natural beauty, but most parts of it are not inhabited by the human beings. Infact, only one of its island is inhabited.
It comprises of mainly four islands namely Makundhoo, Innafushi, Edipparufushi and Fenboahuraa. This part of the country was unknown to non-Maldivians for a long time.
It was only after the survey of the Maldives in the year 1834-36 that this piece of land was made public to the world as a part of the republic of Maldives.
The locals of the country prefer to stay away from this part of country despite its natural beauty. The main reason for this distance is the constant loss of life in this atoll.
It is believed that Maamakunudhoo Atoll has engulfed many ships with cargo, crew and everything else in its barren reef. This is the reason why people of the Republic of Maldives keep away from this part of the country.
Even the government of the country has never shown keen interest in the development of this part of the country.
