Faadhippolhu Atoll: The home of canning factory

Do you wish to visit the only canning factory of the republic of Maldives? If yes, you need to visit Faadhippolhu Atoll of Maldives.

An industrial island is a part of this atoll with tuna canning facilities. This industrial island is located in Felivaru.

The only canning factory of Maldives is located in this atoll in between Hinnavaru and Naifaru islands. Faadhippolhu Atoll, also known as Lhaviyani atoll in the admiralty chart, is an administrative division of the Republic of Maldives.

This atoll comprises of 54 islands. Only five islands out of these 54 islands are inhabited in this atoll. Those five inhabited islands are: Naifaru, Hinnavaru, Kurendhoo, Olhuvelifushi and Maafilaafushi. Maafilafushi is the recently settled island of this atoll.

Earlier Maafilafushi was an uninhabited island of the atoll but it was later resettled in the decade of 1980s. This was done to relieve the lack of living space problem faced by Male’.

Some of the islands of Faadhippolhu Atoll are over populated as compared to the others. The reason for the overpopulation of these islands is the quality of life that these islands can give.

Such overpopulated islands include names like Naifaru and Hinnavaru. These islands are popularly known as concrete jungles as they are completely covered by buildings and less of greenery can be seen on these places.

This atoll is popularly known as simply ‘Faadhippolhu’. The word ‘Atholhu’ is not added to ‘Faadhippolhu’ by the Maldivians in common parlance. The word ‘Atholhu’ is added with only a few atolls.
