Maalhosmadulu Uthuruburi, also known as Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll, is 71 km long and 26 km wide. Like the other Northern atolls of the country, Northern Maalhosmadulu Atoll’s western fringe has a series of oval or round reefs. It is worth mentioning here that these irregularly placed reefs are a peculiar feature of the northern atolls of the Republic of Maldives.
The centre of this atoll is dotted with giri or coral patches. Some of these giri are submerged and the others are awash.
The south west quarter of the atoll has a concentration of these giri. This dense giri structure is close to Kandholhudhu Island. It is noteworthy that the Kandholhudhu Island is the place which is hugerly crowded with reefs. Infact, Kandholhudhu Island has the maximum number of shoals and small reefs in the whole country. The northern part of the atoll is clear of these reefs and is narrower as compared to the other parts of the atoll. The depth of the lagoon varies from 23 to 27 fathoms (42 to 49 meters.)
