Thiladhunmathi Atoll: The delimited lagoon of Maldives

Thiladhunmathi Atoll is one of the few delimited lagoons of the Republic of Maldives. This atoll is very open and an atypical kinds of an atoll.

Thiladhunmathi Atoll, also known as Tiladummati according to the Admiralty Charts, stretches to almost 76 km. this atoll comprises of several islands. All the islands of this atoll are fairly big in size. Kelaa, a large island situated in the North eastern part of this atoll, is a prominent part of this atoll.

The Miladhunmadulu group of islands is an important part of this atoll. This atoll has been divided into four units called North Thiladhunmathi Atoll, South Thiladhunmathi Atoll, North Miladhunmadulu Atoll and South Miladhunmadulu Atoll. This division has been done for administrative purposes.

This atoll is one of the largest atoll on earth with an area of about 3680 sq. km. Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll is also known as Haa Alif Atoll (the administrative division). Northern Thiladhunmathi Atoll has 42 islands, out of which 16 are inhabited.

On the other hand is the Southern Thiladhunmathi Atoll. This is also a natural atoll of the Republic of Maldives. This atoll is also known as Haa Dhaalu (as the administrative division). Southern Thiladhunmathi Atoll also has the island of Makunudhoo which has a fairly large reef as compared to others.

There is a domestic airport on this atoll as well. The domestic airport of this atoll is situated on the island of Hanimaadhoo which is almost 20 km away from the capital city. The capital city of this part of Thiladhunmathi Atoll is Kulhudhuffushi.
