Fasdh?ether? Atoll: The sandwiched atoll
Maldives is a country of atolls. Fasdh?ether? atoll is said to be situated between two atolls. In other words, this atoll is also known as a sandwiched atoll because of its location between the two atolls.
Fasdh?ether? atoll is situated in the northern part of South Maalhosmadulu atoll. The name of the atoll has a different meaning which does not go well with its location. The word Fasdh?ether? means between five islands.
Talking about the geographical structure of this atoll, it is roughly triangular in shape. This is a natural atoll which doesn’t have a distinctive name, unlike the other atolls of Maldives.
It is worth mentioning here that Maldives has 26 atolls in number. These atolls have been divided the government of Maldives for the administrative purposes in a different way, unlike their natural formation and have a different name in the admiralty chart as well.
Fasdh?ether? atoll has a stretch of 22 km from east to west. This atoll comprises of 11 islands but most of the islands of the country are not inhabited. Infact only one island of this atoll called Kudarikilu is inhabited by the people of the country.
Kudarikilu is situated in the Southeast part of this atoll, exactly opposite the Landaa_Giraavaru island of Southern Maalhosmadulu atoll.
The lagoon of this atoll is narrower in its western part. The average depth of this atoll is 19 fathoms (35m approx.)
This atoll is separated by North Maalhosmadulu atoll by a deep channel called Moresby Channel. This channel is called Hani Kandu in the local language.
